Woodside Special Care Centre

From a letter by Woodside Special Care Centre:
”Thank you so much for your kind donation of 24 caps; 15 jerseys, 7 pairs of bed socks and 12 scarves which have been distributed amongst our children and we can assure you will be put to good use this winter. It is truly inspiring to both our children and staff when members of our church community assist us in ways like this. Such spontaneous interest in the well- being of our children gives them and us the assurance that they are still a valued part of the community.”

Only approximately 500 of 1,200 profoundly Intellectually Disabled children in the Western Cape are receiving some form of care outside of their homes. This means that 700 profoundly Intellectually Disabled children receive no care outside their homes. It is evident that the number of profoundly Intellectually Disabled children requiring care far outnumber the number that are catered for in some form of care outside their homes. This confirms the need for more comprehensive and flexible services which are largely community based and affordable.

Given the rights of individuals with Intellectual Disability to community participation, their ability to develop and benefit from a structured programme and the capacity of their family to care for them ,given appropriate support, every effort should be made to meet these needs too.

Woodside has been providing a residential service to profoundly intellectually disabled children, and those who have grown to adulthood in the Centre for 26 years, and is recognised as leaders in this work.
