Consumers or Disciples?

We live in a consumer society. Although we often don’t realise it our lives and our thinking are shaped by that society. Even our understanding of God and the church is affected by the milieu in which we live. For many people the product that is sold by the church is something that makes you feel good on Sunday morning and a ticket to heaven when you die. What more do we want? This is not the gospel of the kingdom of God which Jesus came to proclaim. Jesus came to announce that God is the world’s true ruler (king). The way that he rules is revealed in Jesus the messiah. He rules in love, love for all people and he rules through death and resurrection. We discover his resurrection life when we submit to him as our Lord and as we follow Jesus as his disciples. The Christian life is not about being entertained on Sunday morning.

The Seeds of Today

I am truly grateful to the St Andrew’s family for bringing my work in Lebanon into your prayer time - and this, throughout my recent time away. Craig Stewart’s sermon at one of our morning services had triggered my visit. Up to that time I had been labouring under the delusion that The Warehouse was an Anglican enterprise, linked to Fikelela and devoted to the relief of problems associated with HIV/AIDS. It was good to know the real story.

New Creation

Ask people around the world which they think is the biggest day of the year for Christians. Most would say ‘Christmas’. The true answer is of course Easter. This is the moment of new creation. If it had not been for Easter nobody would have dreamed of celebrating Christmas. This is the first day of God’s new week. The darkness has gone and the sun is shining.
