Revised Common Lectionary

August 2010

Parish of St James & Warblington, Emsworth, West Sussex

A few days before Wimbledon saw Johann and me paying a return visit to the quaint harbour village of Emsworth, where our great friend Gretta Pescod lives. She, together with members of the Mission Committee and the parishioners of St James/Warblington, have been supporting our HIV & AIDS task team with their generous annual donations for the past several years.

Before we lift it was suggested by Rev Simon Sayers that I address the Sunday congregation by way of the young Curate Ben Sargent (who has since been ordained) leading me in a Question and Answer format on the latest statistics and situation of the HIV & AIDS in South Africa, as it was felt that this type of presentation would not only be of interest but would stimulate questions from the congregation. Information for this was prepared by Frank Wright and on our arrival we delivered it to Ben for him to see what it entailed.
The combined Parish of St James and the tiny 12th century church at Warblington has many devout and devoted members and, encouraged by God’s will, they are vibrant, caring and enthusiastic congregations.

With Rev Simon conducting the service at Warblington on that Sunday the Family Service took place at St James, led by Rev Ben and it was during this service that Ben guided me in the Question and Answer presentation, which proved most successful, with several questions coming from the enthusiastic congregation. I was also able, on behalf of St Andrew’s, to again convey our sincere gratitude for their continuing generous support over the years in making a difference in so many lives in the Peninsula, with the numerous Love Packs we are able to provide monthly.

All too soon we had to leave for London as Wimbledon beckoned, but should any of St Andrew’s parishioners visit Emsworth and its environs, we would urge you to try and attend a service at either St James or Warblington churches where one is uplifted by the congregations sharing God’s love.

CALGARY – Alberta, Canada

After having watched the exciting fist week of Wimbledon, we flew to Calgary to stay with out family. After a separation of two years it was wonderful being together again. Whilst visiting friends, Tom and Alison (nee Draeger), Martin (who grew up in Pinelands and attended Rondebosch Boys and Rustenburg Girls respectively), and together with their family have spent most of their married life in Calgary, had a wonderful surprise for us! Knowing that St Andrew’s is supporting HIV & AIDS sufferers, and having lived in SA and still having family ties here, they understand and are aware of the grinding poverty so many of our people endure, especially the vulnerable young, Alison busied herself during the long Calgarian winter nights. With both being members of the Hilhurst United Church in Calgary, where their son-in-law John Pentland is the Pastor, Alison asked parishioners to donate their scraps of wool to the church in order for her to do some knitting. These came in abundance and Alison presented us with ten gorgeous, thick, brightly coloured jerseys, which are going to keep some little children at Fikelela VERY warm!

Once again our HIV & AIDS task team has been blessed, knowing that from such a great distance, friends are aware of the plight of others and are willing to ‘GIVE’ (as God calls us to do), ie the women in their congregation donating those scraps of wool, thereby enabling Alison to use her knitting talent in creating these fabulous jerseys.

On behalf of us all at St Andrew’s, letters of thanks and appreciation will be sent to Pastor John and his Hilhurst United church congregation for thinking of us as we endeavour to help our young HIV & AIDS sufferers.

A photo of Tom, Alison and the jerseys will be found on the hall noticeboard – perhaps some Rondebosch Old Boys or “Rustibugs” may remember and recognise them.

People of Hope

It was wonderful to celebrate John and Thelma Selfe’s 65th wedding anniversary and John’s 90th birthday recently. What outstanding ambassadors they have been for our country and for the Christian faith. It was moving to hear John give thanks to God for blessing them through their lives. Yes it really is true; God blesses us when we walk in his ways. This does not always mean that things are easy, as John and Thelma will testify but because of the great hope of our faith we come through and we look towards the future with hope and joy.
