Lent Course 2012

LENT FOR EVERYONE

Our Lent Course this year will be based on Mark’s Gospel. You will all be asked to read through Mark’s Gospel with a passage set for each day from Ash Wednesday until Easter Sunday. There will be input on the readings starting on Ash Wednesday (February 22nd) and at the Lent Course every Tuesday evening (from 28th February).

You will need to buy a book with the daily readings plus a brief explanation. This is by Bishop Tom Wright. The book is called “Lent for Everyone-Mark” The cost is R65

If you are interested, please write your name on the list at the back of the church, or contact the parish secretary and give your money to Mike or Bev by 13 Feb.

Lent Course 2011

Our Lent Course this year is ‘Surprised by Hope’- Rethinking Heaven, the Resurrection and the Mission of the Church. This course is based on a book by Bishop Tom Wright. Tom Wright has produced a six session DVD course of 20 minutes each together with discussion questions. The course will begin on Wednesday 16th March at 7.30pm in the church.

Tom Wright is the former bishop of Durham. He has recently been appointed as Professor of New Testament Studies at St Andrew’s University in Scotland. He is an outstanding Anglican theologian and author of many books. ‘Surprised by Hope’ is one of his best.

The Book of Esther - Lent Study Course

Esther, like Ezra and Nehemiah, lived during the period when the Persians dominated all of western Asia and Egypt and imposed a high degree of organisation on their vast empire.   Cyrus, their great empire-builder, had permitted exiled Jews to  return to Jerusalem from Babylon in 539 BC (Ezr 1:1-4)  and from then on exiles did go back to rebuild, first their homes, then the temple and later, under Nehemiah, the walls of Jerusalem.   They were a minority, however, and large numbers of Jews remained, scattered throughout the area we now know as Iran and Iraq.
