The lych gate
The lych gate was erected by the Lads Brigade in 1908 to a design by W. Boyce, who was the church's choir master at the time. It was erected in thanksgiving for the fact that the Brigade had not suffered serious injury when their train was derailed on a visit to Worcester. The insurance money they were given was used for the gate.
I attach a picture of the gate which shows Glamorgan House in the background. Glamorgan House was on e of the gracious homes of Newlands at the time. It was later used to house boys from the Tokai Reformatory and was subsequently demolished. Pol Park was built on the site.
I hope this is of interest and that it will inspire us to make an effort to restore the lych gate properly !!
