A Short History
In 2000 the Anglican Church in Cape Town
launched its AIDS outreach programme,
FIKELELA, to
provide an active Christian response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic in South
Africa. Each parish in the diocese was challenged to form a task team to
support the movement and so the St Andrew’s HIV/AIDS task team was
founded.
The
most pressing need seemed to be the packing of LOVE PACKS – food parcels
containing 11 basic items. These are distributed to those infected and
affected by HIV/AIDS. Initially St Andrew’s packed 50 Love Packs each
month; we now pack between 250 – 300 per month. When needed we also pack
COMFORT PACKS containing basic necessities for newborn HIV+ babies.
Funding for this undertaking comes from the parish and from the generous
support of several churches in the UK.
The Task Team also plays a role in making
St Andrew’s aware of what is happening in the HIV/AIDS battle and in
supporting
FIKELELA in all its work.
